Why is the SRCT needed?
With too many buildings and too few worshippers, closure of churches is inevitable. New uses can be found for many redundant churches which enable them to remain a feature of the townscape or countryside, but others are too important to our heritage to allow them to be lost through conversion or neglect. These special churches represent the work of some of Scotland’s finest architects and craftsmen, but are also symbolic of the lives of countless ordinary worshippers throughout the centuries. The SRCT is the only national organisation of its kind taking historic places of worship into care and ensuring that they remain part of Scotland’s heritage.

What happens to the churches?
Churches in Trust care do not remain redundant. Instead, with the help of local people, they are given a new lease of life as places where the community can gather to hold events. They are also made accessible for everyone to experience, enjoy and learn from. People visit to find out more about their family or local history, to take pleasure in the beautiful surroundings, or simply to find a quiet place. Trust churches continue to be used for occasional religious services, including weddings and funerals.

Most buildings coming into care need extensive repairs, and these are carried out to the highest standard using best conservation practice. Skilled contractors use traditional materials and techniques and, wherever possible, training is included to allow these skills to be developed and shared. The Trust is proud to have won several awards for its outstanding conservation work.

Leaving a legacy to the SRCT
The SRCT welcomes legacies in support of our work, and for specific churches in our care. Legacies can either be of a specific amount or they can be part of the residue of your estate. They are simple and straightforward to arrange through your solicitor. A pdf file with further information is available to download by clicking here.
